Being an insurance broker, I am reminded of the statistics of suffering from a critical illness every day. According to the Canadian Heart and Stroke foundation in Canada alone there are 62,000 strokes every year – that is one stroke every nine minutes. Heart disease and stroke is the number 1 killer of women globally and heart disease and stroke will take a life every seven minutes in Canada.
When I was in my early 20’s I came face to face with the effects of heart and stroke. My grandmother was on medication to manage some issues she was having with heart disease and I was the one who found her in her home when she suffered a stroke. I rode with her in the ambulance and fortunately she recovered and lived another 12 years before passing away peacefully at the age of 86.
The effects of heart and stroke disease can be devastating and this year I decided to volunteer to raise funds for Heart and Stroke research. My work as an insurance broker reminds me on a daily basis of the importance of having critical illness insurance as I meet with clients and share with them my story and concern for the impact that the diagnosis of a critical illness can have on a family financially. Critical illness insurance pays a lump sum upon diagnosis after meeting eligibility requirements and the money can be used to help with loss of income, daily expenses and coverage for medical expenses during recovery.
